Dave Oberhoffer
I’ve been a photo journalist for over 50 years, ever since I picked up a camera as a young man and realized it helped me see the world differently. For most of my career, I served as a San Francisco police officer—and I always carried my camera with me on shift. Photography grounded me. It gave me a way to notice light, stillness, and beauty, even in the most unpredictable moments.
These days, I spend most of my time exploring the Northern California coast—especially the stretch between Bay Area and Point Reyes. There’s something about the fog, the cliffs, the ever-changing sky that keeps calling me back. I work exclusively with natural light, letting the land shape the image. It’s not about chasing a perfect shot—it’s about being present when it arrives.
After five decades behind the lens, I’ve learned that the best photographs aren’t staged or forced. They’re honest. Quiet. And deeply rooted in place.
